Theatre

  
  • THEA 324 - Acting the Song


    (3 hour(s)) Prerequisites: MUSI 15132, Studio Voice or permission of the instructor. Acting the Song includes the study of opera and Musical Theatre literature as they relate to performance practice. The course is designed to improve engagement in and preparation for performances that involve singing. It will emphasize the development of a performer’s ability to embrace music as a means of conveying and rounding out character choices that engage the performer and, subsequently, the audience. Singer-actors and actor-singers will develop a number of scenes and selections from various genres as applied to their vocal ability and program of study. The course will include multiple aspects of instruction in characterization and musical preparation of literature, pursuit of clear objectives, audition techniques, and utilization of text and context. This course cannot be challenged.
  
  • THEA 325 - Movement for the Actor


    (3 hour(s)) Prerequisites: COMM 110, THEA 221, and THEA 321. Movement for the Actor will explore clowning (pratfalls, gags, physical comedy, etc.), stage combat (hand-to-hand as well as armed), and physical transformation for character work.  Students will be taken through the Viewpoints movement training methodology as a base for the physical work.  Students will perform clown/mime scenes, combat scenes, create a physical character and work on dramatic pieces that call for the integration of these techniques.  Approved for major credit in Theatre or as a general elective.
  
  • THEA 421 - Advanced Acting


    (3 hour(s)) Prerequisite: THEA 321. A continuation of THEA 321 with specific emphasis on emotionally-charged material, including the classics. Presentation and assessment of at least two monologues (one Greek and one Shakespeare) and one contemporary scene.  The semester culminates in a presentation of an ‘audition portfolio’.
  
  • THEA 469 - Theatre Production Internship


    (3 hour(s)) Prequisites: COMM 110, COMM 250, BUSI 204, or CHST 424. Qualified students may apply for internships where they become involved in at least one major off-campus production. Each student is expected to devote a minimum of 112 hours per semester to receive credit. Applicants must be recommended by the internship coordinator and approved by the production stage director. A portfolio must be submitted, containing the applicable following items: number of hours involved, drawings for design elements, photographs of the production, essays detailing what has been completed and learned. Students will also be encouraged to submit additional portfolios containing drawings for costumes, scenery, lighting, or advertisement posters to the Southeastern Theatre Conference, Inc. design competitions. Note: The grading is on a pass/fail basis. Counts for ELR credit.
  
  • THEA 470 - Theatre Production Internship


    (3 hour(s)) Prerequisites: COMM 110, an overall 2.75 GPA and permission of the instructor. Qualified students may apply for internships where they become involved in at least one major off-campus production.   • WRLD 213 - World Literature in Translation


    (3 hour(s)) Prerequisites: ENGL 111 and 112. This course is a broad survey of the most important authors in world literature from the ancient period to the present time. Included is literature from Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
