Biology: Preprofessional Emphasis (BS Degree)

A major in Biology with a Preprofessional Emphasis consists of 57 hours in Biology courses including the required 12 hours of supporting studies and does not require a minor. If a student chooses a minor, they may not choose BiologySee additional information below for the following tracks: Pre-Med, Pre-Dental, Pre-Vet, Pre-Physical Therapy, Pre-Occupational Therapy and Pre-Physician Assisting.  Courses from other departments are also required as shown below:

Note:


  • All students placed in ENGL 099 and/or MATH 099 must complete the course(s) successfully before being allowed into BIOL 161 and BIOL 161L.
  •   or   is a prerequisite to MATH 130. 

Foreign Language requirement (hours included above)


Students are required to take a minimum of 3 credit hours but are not required to progress past FL 202 (Intermediate II) if the student places higher than FL 201.  If a student places higher than 202, the student has completed her/his required FL credit.  Note that this placement does not count toward the required 125 hours (may vary according to degree) required of all CSU students.

Choose one of the following courses:

  • ARAB 110 and 110L, 120, 201, or 202 or
  • FREN 110 and 110L, 120, 201, or 202 or
  • SPAN 110, 111 or 112 and 110L, 101, 102, 120, 201, or 202 or
  • CHST 121, 122, 131, or 132 or
  • Any other 3 hour foreign language course.

Required Biology Electives (9 hours):


Students must take an additional 9 hours of Biology courses. Biol 110 and 162 are not approved electives.

See your advisor for additonal information; for the following tracks, consider taking the following:


  • Pre-Med track: add MATH 213, PHYS 201 and 202, and choose BIOL 437 for one of the required electives; BIOL 162 and CHEM 311 are recommended, but not required.
  • Pre-Dental track: add PHYS 201 and 202.
  • Pre-Pharmacy track: add BIOL 162, MATH 213, MATH 221, PHYS 201, ECON 211 or 212 and PSYC 110.
  • Pre-Vet track: add BIOL 162, BIOL 345, MATH 213, PHYS 201 and 202, and CHEM 311; MATH 221, BIOL 340 and BIOL 462 are recommended, but not required.
  • Pre-Physical Therapy track: BIOL 162, BIOL 302, MATH 213, PHYS 201 and 202 and PSYC 275.
  • Pre-Occupational Therapy track: add BIOL 302, MATH 213, PSYC 275, SOCI 101 or 205, and NURS 260 or EDUC 313.
  • Pre-Physician Assisting track: add BIOL 302, MATH 213, and PSYC 275. (For USC add CHEM 311; for MUSC add NURS 260)
  • There may be different requirements for out of state programs. Contact the Biology Department Chair or your academic advisor for additional information.

Note:


All students must have at least 125 hours to graduate. Students who took MATH 099 or ENGL 099 will need at least 129 hours to graduate. Full Bridge students will need at least 133 hours. Students must meet the Residency Requirements  described in this catalog.
