Bachelor of Technology Degree Program
The Bachelor of Technology degree provides a liberal arts education and a core of professionally related cognate courses for persons holding an associate degree in an approved technical field. Approved cognate areas include Aviation Maintenance Management, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, and Medical Laboratory Technology. No minor is required.
Because of the spectrum of expectation of this degree, flexibility and individual tailoring of the cognate curriculum are allowed. No more than 89 hours from sources other than baccalaureate degree-granting institutions may be used toward the 125 hours required for the Bachelor of Technology Degree from Charleston Southern University.
Any time a student enrolled in the Bachelor of Technology degree program drops out of the University for two consecutive major semesters, the Degree Requirement Form is subject to revision so as to meet regulations in effect at the time of the student’s return.
The academic plan of individualized curriculum for a Bachelor of Technology degree contains four categories of requirements as follows:
Category I:
Associate Degree Program: This contains all courses included in the associate degree, not exceeding 89 semester hours. This credit would be accepted as a package without regard to distribution, but excluding hours CSU considers remedial hours.
Category II:
Liberal Arts Core Requirements: This consists of the basic requirements for all baccalaureate degrees. Most students will have completed some of these requirements in the associate degree program. For the foreign language requirement, students are required to take a minimum of 3 credit hours but are not required to progress past FL 202 (Intermediate II) if the student places higher than FL 201. If a student places higher than 202, the student has completed her/his required FL credit. Note that this placement does not count toward the required 125 hours (may vary according to degree) required of all CSU students.
Category III:
Cognate Courses: These will be CSU courses that will be determined by the appropriate Dean in conjunction with the student and approved by the appropriate Department Chairperson and the Registrar. A minimum of 18 hours from one discipline will be required with at least 15 hours at the 300 or 400 level.
Category IV:
Elective Courses: A minimum of 125 semester hours will be required for the Bachelor of Technology Degree. If the total hours from Category I, II and III are not equal or greater than 125 semester hours, then elective courses will be used to reach this total. The total hours from Categories I, II, and III may exceed 125. All students are reminded that no more than 68 hours from sources other than baccalaureate degree-granting institutions may be used toward the hours required for graduation.
