English (BA Degree)

A major in English consists of 42 hours and requires a minor.

English (42 hours) + Liberal Arts Core (47 hours)


Liberal Arts Core (47 hours)


Note:


ENGL 111  and 112  are to be taken in sequence and are prerequisite to all other English courses.

Foreign Language requirement (3 hours included in Liberal Arts Core above)


Additional hours may be required depending on foreign language placement. Students are required to take:

a) through Foreign Language (FL) 201 Intermediate I (incorporating Arabic, Spanish, French, or other languages offered; eg, SPAN 201  , FREN 201  ) if a student starts with no advanced placement or places into 110, 120, or 201, earning a minimum of 3 hours but not to exceed 9 hours;

or

b) through Foreign Language (FL) 202 (Intermediate II) if the student places higher than FL 201.  If a student places higher than 202, the student has completed her/his required FL credit.  Note that this placement does not count toward the required 125 hours (may vary according to degree) required of all CSU students.

or

c) CHST 121  and  CHST 122   or CHST 131  and CHST 132  .

Major Studies (42 hours)


All courses in Group I are required. At least two courses in Group II are required. At least one course in Group III is required and *either a second course in group III or in Group V is required. No more than three courses can count toward the major from any one of Groups III- VII. Students must earn grades of “C” or better in courses counting toward the major.

Group III: American Literature (3 -6 hours)


*Will need to take 6 hours if no courses are chosen from Group V

Group IV: Nineteenth-Century British Literature


Group V: Twentieth-Century Literature and Contemporary Literature (3 hours*)


*Unless you choose 6 hours  from Group III

Group VII: Grammar and Composition Theory and Practice


Note:


** In some cases the department chairperson may designate that a Special Topics (ENGL 480) class satisfies other group requirements. See “Special Topic Courses  ” information in this catalog.

*** Internship hours may count as general elective hours or toward the major under group VI, depending on the nature of the internship. The department chairperson will specify whether the internship counts toward the major when approving the internship.

Note:


All students must have at least 125 hours to graduate. Students who took MATH 099 or ENGL 099 will need at least 129 hours to graduate. Full Bridge students will need at least 133 hours. Students must meet the Residency Requirements  described in this catalog.
