The Experiential Learning Requirement (ELR)

All traditional undergraduate students entering Charleston Southern University with 0-59 credit hours are required to complete two Experiential Learning Requirements (ELR) as part of the Experiential Learning Initiative (ELI) in order to fulfill graduation requirements.  Traditional undergraduate transfer students transferring in 60 hours or more must earn one ELR to graduate.   In order to satisfy this requirement, at least one of the ELRs must be earned through successful completion of a course bearing a minimum of one credit hour with an ELR designation.  This designation is noted in the course description.  ELR classes include internships, clinicals, practicums, field courses, travel courses, applied learning, or career planning courses, among others.  The second ELR may be earned through either further academic work or through completion of a service learning project pre-approved by the student’s advisor and the Dean of Students.
