Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs of Study

The Bachelor of Arts in Music Therapy consists of 88-89 hours and does not require a minor. A minimum grade of “C” must be earned in Biology 210

, MUSI 371  , Psychology 110  and all courses listed under Major Studies with the exception of Studio Lessons and Ensembles, where a minimum grade of “B” must be earned.

The music therapy program at CSU is approved by the American Music Therapy Association. Music Therapy Internship (MUSI 496) occurs following completion of all other coursework required for the degree; therefore, the Bachelor of Arts in Music Therapy degree may take as long as 5 academic years to complete. The acquisition of a music therapy degree at CSU and successful completion of the board exam will result in professional certification by the Certification Board for Music Therapists.

Advanced Standing

Advanced Standing (095-53 ) is awarded following successful completion of the third Music Therapy Clinical Experience, the music theory sequence (

), and Guitar Proficiency (  ). A student may not continue in the Music Therapy Clinical Experience sequence past the third clinical until earning Advanced Standing. A student must also demonstrate appropriate skills in at least 80 percent of the music therapy competencies designated for the first three clinical experiences. These competencies are outlined in the music therapy clinical experience handbook. Students should register for Advanced Standing during the semester in which they are enrolled in their third clinical experience, if they have or will have also completed the music theory sequence and passed the guitar proficiency by the end of that semester.

Dismissal from Program

If a student is unable to successfully pass on the second attempt, Biology 210 , Music 241  and 371 , Psychology 110 , or a required course listed under Major Studies, he or she will be dismissed from the program. A student may also be dismissed from the music therapy program at the discretion of the faculty program director for reasons including, but not limited to, a pattern of poor academic performance; observed deficits in interpersonal communication or relationships, critical thinking, or music skills; unacceptable personal responsibility or professional behavior; or lack of insight or understanding about concepts related to the successful provision of music therapy services. Please refer to the music therapy program handbook for other related policies.

Post baccalaureate Certification

Students who have a bachelor’s degree in music or a related field are permitted to take courses required by the American Music Therapy Association in order to sit for the board exam given by the Certification Board for Music Therapists. Successful completion of coursework, internship and a passing exam score result in professional certification.
