Honors Program

The Honors Program, designed to challenge and encourage the most academically distinguished students at CSU, combines unique academic opportunities with a variety of cultural and social activities. The program is open to qualified candidates entering as freshmen, though current students and transfer students whose transcripts indicate progress and performance consistent with CSU Honors Program standards are eligible to apply. The notation of successful completion of the Honors Program on a transcript often provides an advantage for both employment and graduate school application.

Incoming students with an SAT score of 1270 or higher or an ACT score of 27 or higher along with a high school GPA of 3.5 may be eligible for participation in the Honors Program. Current students and transfer students are encouraged to apply if they have not completed more than their freshman year, and their college transcripts show evidence of sustained academic excellence (a 3.5 GPA earned in no more than 30 hours of coursework).

Successful completion of the Honors Program (24 credit hours) requires:

  • Honors Seminars (2 credit hours): During the freshman fall semester, Honors Program students will be introduced to others in their cohorts as well as be equipped with the necessary knowledge for completing the Honors Program. In their sophomore year Honors students participate in a Leadership seminar that includes guided studies as well as providing mentorship for the incoming class of freshmen.

Between the Honors Core and Honors Elective courses, students will complete five special classes available only to Honors students; some of these replace standard courses in the Liberal Arts Core. These classes offer a “history of ideas” approach to various disciplines, including philosophy, history, science, literature, and economics.

Qualified students have the option of completing a Minor in Interdisciplinary Honors Studies  (19 credit hours) instead of or in addition to the regular Honors Program. The same academic milestones above apply for the Minor.

Admissions to the Honors Program and Minor are based on the decision of the Honors Program Council. Candidates will be notified of their acceptance into the program. Students wishing to apply should submit a letter of application to the Director of the Honors Program, c/o the Office of Enrollment Services, CSU. P O Box 118087, Charleston, SC 29423-8087.
