MPAS 580 - Clinical Year Prep (4 hours) Prerequisites: Successful completion of Units 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the didactic year. This 5-week course in Unit 5 of the fall semester is designed to develop the student’s clinical acumen regarding clinical procedures and technical skills for care across the lifespan, specifically focusing on the principles of rehab patient encounters and examinations, perioperative patient management, minor surgical procedures, and fundamentals of emergency medicine. This class is designed to build on the skills taught in the Patient Assessment and Diagnostic Methods I, II, and III course series. Emphasis is placed on active learning experiences regarding venipuncture and intravenous (IV)-line placement, airway insertion and management, casting and splinting, skin biopsies, and intramuscular injections, incision and drainage of abscesses, local and regional blocks, suturing and laceration repair, evaluation and care of basic wounds and skin burns, scrubbing and sterile technique, gowning and gloving procedures, applying interprofessional principles, Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Students will also be required to perform a complete physical examination and participate in an interprofessional educational experience as part of this course. Some components of this course will be posted outside of the scheduled meeting times. Note: This course cannot be challenged.
