MPAS 540 - Patient Assessment & Diagnostic Methods I


(2 hours) Prerequisites: Successful completion of Unit 1 of the didactic year.  This 12-week course in Unit 2 of the spring semester is the first in a three-course series designed to introduce students to the art of history taking and the techniques of physical exams. This course will meet twice weekly and consist of interactive lectures, large and small groups, team-based activities, and laboratory formats using lab partners, simulated patients, and task trainers. Focus will be placed on instruction on the proper use of diagnostic equipment, and students will be introduced to ordering and interpreting diagnostic imaging and laboratory results. Students will also learn to synthesize and present patient information as part of the medical decision-making team. This course will focus on hematology, infectious disease, dermatology, HEENT, and gastrointestinal/nutritional systems in complement to the material of the clinical medicine course. Note: This course cannot be challenged.
