Health Promotion (B.S. Degree)

A major in Health Promotion consists of 47 hours. No minor is required.

Mission:
The mission of the Health Promotion major is to provide graduates with ethical and professional knowledge and skills needed to develop and implement health education and promotion services for individuals, groups and community while respecting cultural, ethnic, religious, and individual differences and commonalities.

Program/Major Outcomes:
Graduates with a Bachelor of Science with a major in Health Promotion will be professionally competent at an entry level to:

  1. Synthesize knowledge gained from the Liberal Arts Core and supporting courses in the biophysical and psychosocial sciences in providing health education and health promotion to individuals, groups and the community.
  2. Assess individual, groups, and community needs for health education and health promotion services.
  3. Plan and implement health education and health promotion strategies, interventions and programs.
  4. Utilize research designs, methods and findings to plan and evaluate the effectiveness of health education and health promotion programs.
  5. Analyze the effectiveness of the multiple roles of the health educator and health promoter required to meet the changing health care needs of a culturally diverse and complex society.
  6. Characterize professional values and moral behavior within the legal and ethical boundaries of comprehensive health education and health promotion services.

Note:


Students must earn grades of “C” or better in ENGL 111  and 112 ; MATH 105  or higher; CHEM 110 ; and, BIOL 215 .

Note:


Graduates with this major will be qualified to take the credentialing examination offered by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC) to become a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).
