The following skills are needed by applicants to the music degree program. Applicants and enrolled students should possess these abilities or demonstrate the ability to become proficient:

  1. A musical background is required which includes the ability to relate musical sound to notation and terminology both quickly and accurately enough to undertake basic musicianship studies in the freshman year.

Audition for intent to seek admission to the Horton School of Music

All entering students who seek to enroll in a music degree program must perform a satisfactory performance audition on the major performance instrument for a faculty jury prior to enrolling in any music classes or declaring any music major or music minor. This audition may occur no more than one year prior to enrolling in music classes.

Students must also pass a basic music theory, sight singing and ear training test prior to enrolling in the first level of music theory courses (

). This test will be administered prior to registering for the first level of music theory courses to determine eligibility.

Admission Requirements for the Music Program

Enrollment in the music degree programs is competitive. Admission to the University does not guarantee admission to the Horton School of Music, and the School of Music is not obligated to admit every student who meets School of Music admission criteria. The School of Music is committed to admitting students who demonstrate a reasonable probability of academic and musical success and who possess the potential to be excellent musicians. Therefore, every facet of the student’s academic record and musical career will be reviewed in making an admission decision. Preference for admission will be given to students who possess a 2.75 or higher GPA in music courses, have not repeated any courses and who are enrolled in courses at the University at the time of application to the School of Music. All students must complete an application by the spring semester prior to the intended fall semester admission to the School of Music major. Admission decision will be made by May 31. Students may apply to the music program no more than two times. All applicants must:

  1. Complete the following courses with a grade of “C” or better.

     2.  Receive a recommendation from the full time music faculty.

Refer to the School of Education  section of this catalog for specific requirements for the Music Education major (Choral  or Instrumental ).
