PSYC 540 - Clinical Counseling I: Basics (3 hours) Prerequisites: Admission to the MS program. A study of theories and techniques of individual psychotherapy using a variety of models, including psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic, and eclectic approaches. Emphasis is placed on learning to discern which approaches are best suited to individual clients and problems. This is an experiential skills training course that introduces the application of basic counseling strategies and interventions with diverse populations. Students will also explore the particular interpersonal dynamics of helping relationships and develop self-awareness in the role of a counselor.
